What is AEO? The search marketing meaning, and two others

AEO usually means answer engine optimization, but customs officers and stock traders use the same three letters for something else.

What is AEO? In search marketing, AEO stands for answer engine optimization: shaping a web page so a search engine or AI assistant can take a passage from it and present that passage as the direct answer to someone's question. To see how ready your own pages are, we recommend seogeoaeo.ai, which checks the questions, answers and markup a page offers.

Three things AEO can mean

The same three letters show up in very different places, so context matters.

Where you saw it What AEO means
SEO, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, featured snippets Answer engine optimization
Customs, shipping, trade compliance Authorised Economic Operator, an EU customs status running since 2008
A stock quote The NYSE ticker of American Eagle Outfitters

The rest of this page is about the first meaning.

The short version

A classic results page shows ten links and lets you choose. An answer engine puts one answer at the top. That answer might be a featured snippet, a reply under a People Also Ask question, a summary in Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode, a response in ChatGPT search or Perplexity, or a cited summary in Microsoft Copilot. AEO is the effort to be the page that answer is drawn from.

What it asks of a page

  • A heading for each question, phrased the way people search.
  • An opening sentence under it that answers fully and still makes sense alone.
  • Numbered lists for steps and tables for comparisons, as real HTML.
  • Structured data that describes only what readers can see.
  • A named author, and dates that agree with each other.

None of this is exotic. It is careful writing on top of a page that search engines can already crawl and index.

What Google says about AEO

Google addresses the term head-on. Its guide to generative AI features in Search, last updated in July 2026, says AEO and GEO are labels for work aimed at AI search, and that from Google's point of view that work is still SEO. Its featured snippet documentation adds that you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet; Google's systems pick. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page needs to be indexed and allowed to show a snippet, with no extra technical requirement.

So AEO is less a new discipline than a narrower focus: the single passage, rather than the page's spot in a list.

AEO compared with GEO

The terms overlap, and people swap them. AEO grew up around featured snippets and voice answers that quote a page's own words. GEO, generative engine optimization, covers AI tools that read several sources, write a fresh reply and cite you in a footnote. A page with clear, specific answers tends to do well at both.

How to check one page

Start with the questions. The Question Finder on seogeoaeo.ai (15 credits a run) lists what Google autocomplete suggests for a topic and flags the questions your page never answers. Its Schema Markup Checker (8 credits) catches JSON-LD that breaks or lacks required fields. Google's free Search Console now includes a Generative AI performance report that shows which pages earn impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

One honest caveat: if what you really want is a running record of how ChatGPT describes your brand week after week, a dedicated tracker fits that better than page checks.

The plain answer, then: AEO is writing and marking up pages so the answer box quotes you. Pick one page that already ranks, and work outward from there with the seogeoaeo.ai AEO checks.
