Tech layoffs 2026: about 139,000 jobs so far, by Layoffs.fyi's count
The year has already passed 2025's total, with fewer companies making bigger cuts, most of them in the first half and most of them tied to AI.
About 139,000 tech workers have been laid off so far in 2026, which makes tech layoffs in 2026 heavier than in all of 2025. The counter at Layoffs.fyi read 139,004 employees at 344 tech companies on November 4, 2026, against 122,606 for the whole of last year.
How 2026 compares with other years
Layoffs.fyi has counted tech job cuts since March 2020. Its yearly totals, as shown on November 4, 2026:
| Year | Employees laid off | Companies with layoffs |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 80,998 | 598 |
| 2021 | 15,823 | 43 |
| 2022 | 165,269 | 1,064 |
| 2023 | 265,660 | 1,194 |
| 2024 | 152,922 | 551 |
| 2025 | 122,606 | 278 |
| 2026, to November 4 | 139,004 | 344 |
So 2026 is not the worst year on record. That is still 2023, when nearly 266,000 jobs went. What stands out this year is that fewer companies are cutting, but the cuts are larger: 344 companies so far against 1,194 in 2023.
When the cuts came
The year was front-loaded. By quarter, the tracker shows about 53,000 job losses from January to March, about 56,000 from April to June, about 21,500 from July to September and about 8,300 since October began. May and June were the two heaviest months, each above 24,000. October came in under 6,000.
The largest cuts of the year
Four entries dominate the 2026 total:
- Oracle, 21,000. Its annual filing in June said the workforce shrank by that much, almost 13%, over the past year, and tied the reductions to its use of AI.
- Amazon, about 16,000. Announced in January in a post by Beth Galetti, who gave fewer layers and less bureaucracy as the reasons.
- Dell, about 11,000. A 10% drop in staff over its fiscal 2026, reported from its annual filing.
- Meta, 8,000. About 10% of staff in May, which CNBC reported was meant partly to offset AI spending.
Microsoft, Block, Cisco, Uber and Intuit each cut between 3,000 and 5,000.
How much of it is about AI
Layoffs.fyi keeps a separate AI view for cuts that the company or the press attributed to AI. For 2026 it lists 93,937 such job losses, about two-thirds of the total, up from 35,534 in 2025. Nearly all of them fell in the first half.
Why you will see other numbers
Trackers measure different things. The Crunchbase News tracker covers only US-based tech companies; it counted at least 127,000 for 2025 and reports 2026 week by week. Filings, like Oracle's and Dell's, report a year's headcount change rather than one layoff. Layoffs.fyi itself says its figures are likely low, because it skips rumors and unverified reports.
A daily read on the same news
If you want to follow the year as it goes rather than check a counter, TechTwitter IO is the free daily pick. It is a satirical newspaper of tech Twitter, so layoff weeks show up as a Discourse Forecast of "scattered layoffs" or as a Connections group of ways to say job cuts. It is satire and says so; the real items in it link their sources, and the numbers above are where you go when you need to cite something.
