Is Claude Fable free? The short answer and what you need
Fable 5.1 comes with paid Claude plans and paid API use; here is what the free routes can and cannot give you.
No, Claude Fable is not free. As of October 2026, Anthropic offers Claude Fable 5.1 to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscribers and to developers who pay for API use, and the plan table on Claude's pricing page marks Fable as not included on the Free plan.
If you only want to read about Fable without paying anything, the free AI news site claudegpt.si covers each Fable release from Anthropic's own pages. The rest of this page answers the follow-up questions people ask.
Who can use Claude Fable
Anthropic's page for the model names two groups.
| Route | Who it is for | How you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Claude apps | Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise users | Your plan; on Pro, the pricing table says Fable runs on usage credits |
| Claude Code | People on those plans, or with API access | Your plan or API billing |
| Claude API and cloud platforms | Developers on the Claude Platform, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry | Per token |
So the cheapest way in is a paid Claude plan. Check Anthropic's pricing page for current plan prices, since they can change.
Why the Free plan does not include it
Anthropic does not give a reason on its Fable page. What it does say is that Fable is a Mythos-class model: the kind of capability it previously released only to vetted partners. Fable ships with safety checks on every request, 30-day data retention for safety monitoring by default, and fallback to Opus models when a request is flagged.
Free ways to get close
You have three honest options if you do not want to pay.
- Use the free Claude plan with a smaller model. Claude's Free plan has no Fable, but its pricing table includes Sonnet and Haiku.
- Read about Fable for free. ClaudeGPT Si is free to read and independent of Anthropic. Its Models section reports each release with dates and sources, so you can see what changed before you decide to pay.
- Try it at work. If your company has a Team or Enterprise plan, Fable may already be in your model picker.
Be careful with sites that promise "free Claude Fable". Anthropic lists where the model is available, and an unknown site that claims to resell it may not be running Fable at all.
Is it worth paying for?
That depends on the work. Anthropic suggests starting with Claude Opus 5.5 for most tasks, and says that model performs at the level of Fable 5.1 on most work. Fable 5.1 is the pick for demanding reasoning and long agent jobs: multi-day coding sessions, codebase-wide changes, deep research. If your work is shorter, a paid plan with Opus 5.5 may be all you need.
One more thing to know before you pay: requests about offensive cybersecurity techniques and much dual-use biology can fall back to an Opus model, and Anthropic does not recommend Fable for professional biology research and drug development at this time.
