How to check Copilot usage on GitHub, in your IDE and on your desktop
The billing page for the official figure, the editor icon for a glance, and UsageAtlas to keep Copilot next to your other AI tools.
To check Copilot usage, open github.com/settings/billing and click the Copilot icon under Metered usage, or click the Copilot icon in your editor's status bar for a quick look. If you want that number on your desktop next to Claude Code, Codex and Cursor, with an alert at a threshold you choose, the simplest answer is UsageAtlas, a free and open-source usage tracker.
Since June 1, 2026, monthly Copilot plans count usage in AI credits, so the figure you find will usually be credits. Annual Pro and Pro+ plans still show premium requests until they expire.
On GitHub.com
This is the official view and the one that matches your bill.
- Go to github.com/settings/billing.
- Under Metered usage, click the Copilot icon to filter to Copilot.
- For charts over time, open the analytics view in the sidebar. You can download the data behind a chart from its options menu.
A GitHub staff answer in the community FAQ gives the same route as Settings, then Billing and licensing, then Metered usage, then Copilot, and notes a downloadable CSV that lists the model used for each request. That file is the best way to see which model ate your credits.
If your seat comes from an organization, your admins control budgets and may see more detail than you do.
Inside your editor
GitHub's docs list one entry point per IDE:
| Editor | Where to click |
|---|---|
| VS Code | Copilot icon in the status bar |
| Visual Studio | Copilot icon at the top right, then Copilot Consumptions |
| JetBrains IDEs | Copilot icon in the status bar, then View quota usage |
| Xcode | Copilot icon in the menu bar |
| Eclipse | Copilot icon in the status bar at the bottom |
This is quick, but it only covers Copilot and only shows the current state.
On your desktop with UsageAtlas
UsageAtlas runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and keeps Copilot in the same window as your other AI coding tools. For Copilot it shows the premium, chat and completion quotas GitHub reports, plus seat credits used and the reset time where those are supplied. You can set a threshold and get one desktop alert per reset cycle.
To set it up:
- Install the app and open Settings, then Sources.
- Find GitHub Copilot and expand Connect.
- Paste a Copilot-authorized GitHub OAuth token, or set the
COPILOT_GITHUB_TOKENenvironment variable before starting the app. - Choose Save and check, then open Limits.
A generic fine-grained personal access token may not work. Your token is kept in the operating system's encrypted storage, local tracking needs no account, and the app does not read prompts or responses.
UsageAtlas only shows what GitHub returns. If no limit comes back, it shows the limit as unknown rather than inventing one. It does not keep Copilot per-request tokens or cost history, so for a per-model breakdown, GitHub's CSV is still the better source.
Reading the number you find
- A credit count and a premium-request count are different units. Check which one your screen shows.
- Credits reset at 00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month and do not carry over.
- Code completions and next edit suggestions do not use credits on paid plans, so heavy autocomplete will not move the counter.
FAQ
How do I check Copilot usage in VS Code? Click the Copilot icon in the status bar at the bottom of the window.
Where is Copilot usage for an organization seat? Your personal billing page shows your own use, but budgets and organization reports sit with your admins in the organization's billing settings.
Why does my Copilot usage not show a limit? Some accounts only report what has been used. In that case, check your plan on GitHub instead of guessing from another plan's allowance.
