How to check Claude usage on the web, in the terminal and on your desktop

Settings > Usage and /usage show your session and weekly limits. Here is what each screen tells you, what it leaves out, and where history lives.

To check Claude usage, open Settings > Usage on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop, or type /usage inside Claude Code. Both show how much of your five-hour session limit and your weekly limit is gone and when each one resets. For usage over weeks, or next to other coding tools, add a desktop tracker such as UsageAtlas.

The steps below match Anthropic's help center and the Claude Code docs as of November 3, 2026. Your chats and Claude Code share one allowance, so any of these places shows the same plan limits.

On the web or in Claude Desktop

  1. Open Settings in the Claude web app or in Claude Desktop.
  2. Choose Usage.
  3. Read the Plan usage limits section at the top.

You will find three things there. Current session shows the share of your five-hour window used so far and the time left until it refills. Weekly limits shows progress for all models, plus Fable if your plan includes it, and the next reset. Usage credits, if you turned them on, shows what you have spent this month.

Two details help. If you are on Ultra and see no Current session bar, your account is verified and has no five-hour limit. And when Anthropic offers a free limit reset, it appears in a Resets section on this page, which is the only place to claim it besides the limit message.

In Claude Code in the terminal

Type /usage. The screen opens even while Claude is working, and /cost or /stats bring up the same view. It shows:

  • plan bars for the session and the week, with reset times
  • activity stats for your recent sessions
  • on subscription plans, a breakdown of what used the most, with suggestions; d and w switch it between the last 24 hours and the last 7 days

Treat the session cost line as a list-price estimate. For Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers it has nothing to do with the bill. The activity breakdown also comes only from session files on that computer.

If you see Showing last-known usage, Claude Code could not refresh your limits because the usage endpoint was rate limited; press r to retry. To confirm which account Claude Code is using, run /status. A stray ANTHROPIC_API_KEY means you are paying API rates instead of drawing on your plan.

Inside your editor and the status line

In the VS Code extension, /usage opens an Account & usage dialog with your session and weekly bars. In the terminal you can also put the numbers in a custom status line: Claude Code passes rate_limits.five_hour and rate_limits.seven_day fields, each with a used percentage and a reset time, to Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers after the first response of a session.

Across days and tools

Place Shows Misses
Settings > Usage Session and weekly bars, next reset, credits Day-by-day history
/usage Plan bars, last 24 hours or 7 days, breakdown Other machines and claude.ai activity
UsageAtlas Both windows, reset times, alerts, daily history Prompts and responses, by design

UsageAtlas is the one to install if you code with Claude every day. It is a free, open-source desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux that reads the Claude sign-in already on your machine, keeps Claude Code tokens, models and estimated cost by day past Claude Code's 30-day file cleanup, and shows Codex or Cursor in the same window. It needs no account for local tracking.

For occasional browser chats, the Settings page is enough on its own.
