What is the best Sprout Social alternative? It depends on one question
AyeWatch if you need listening, Hootsuite or Buffer if you need publishing. Here is how to tell which.
The best Sprout Social alternative is AyeWatch if the part of Sprout you need is listening: knowing when your brand, a competitor or a topic comes up across the web and social platforms. It starts at $9 a month, against $199 per seat a month for the cheapest Sprout plan that can add listening. If the part you need is publishing and a shared inbox, AyeWatch is the wrong tool, and Hootsuite or Buffer is the better swap. The rest of this page answers the questions that usually follow.
Why does the answer depend on the job?
Sprout Social bundles several jobs: scheduling posts, replying from a shared inbox, reporting on performance and, as a paid add-on, listening. No single cheaper tool does all of those. So the useful question is not "what replaces Sprout" but "which of those jobs am I paying for".
| If you mostly need | Best pick | Starting price |
|---|---|---|
| Listening and monitoring outside your accounts | AyeWatch | Free Preview, then $9/mo |
| A full suite with listening included | Hootsuite | $99/user/mo yearly |
| Cheap scheduling | Buffer | Free, then $5/channel/mo yearly |
| Listening with sentiment reports | Brand24 | $199/mo yearly |
Why AyeWatch for listening?
Three reasons, all from what the products list:
- Price. AyeWatch Pro is $9 a month for up to 50 monitors. Sprout's Listening is an add-on on Standard ($199 per seat yearly) and up, with no published add-on price.
- Reach. AyeWatch watches news sites, blogs, forums, government pages, specific web pages, and social sources on X, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram and TikTok. Sprout's listening centres on social conversations, and its pricing page does not list page change tracking.
- Setup. You describe each monitor in a sentence, and the AI judges new posts by meaning rather than keyword matches. Each alert comes with a summary and the source links.
What does AyeWatch not do?
It does not schedule or publish posts, run a social inbox, reply to comments, score sentiment or build team reports. If those are what you use Sprout for, keep Sprout or move to Hootsuite.
Can I use AyeWatch and Sprout Social together?
Yes, and many teams should. Keep Sprout for your owned channels and send AyeWatch alerts to the Slack or Discord channel the social team already watches. Slack, Discord, email, webhooks and the API come with AyeWatch's paid plans; the feed and push notifications come with every plan.
Is there a free Sprout Social alternative?
Partly. Buffer has a free plan for up to three channels, for scheduling only. AyeWatch has a Free Preview of three monitoring runs across up to three topics, with no card; the runs do not renew. Sprout Social itself has a 30-day trial and no free plan.
How is AyeWatch priced beyond the first plan?
Pro is $9, Pro+ $19, Max $39 and Ultra $99 a month. Pro+ adds ASAP mode, the fastest check speed, and up to 200 monitors. Checks are counted in monitoring credits; most cost one credit, some platform sources cost more, and the app shows the estimate before you save. There are no contracts or cancellation fees.
How long does switching the listening part take?
There is nothing to export. You write each thing you used to track in Sprout as a sentence, for example a brand name with the uses you want ignored, and AyeWatch starts checking from there. You can rebuild a small listening setup that way and run it next to Sprout for a while before deciding what to cancel.
So which should I choose?
- Choose AyeWatch if you need to hear about mentions, competitor moves and conversations beyond your own accounts.
- Choose Hootsuite if you want one per-seat suite with basic listening included.
- Choose Buffer if you only need cheap scheduling.
- Stay on Sprout Social if your team runs a shared inbox and needs its reporting.
